Africans In Bordeaux
This project was born out of curiosity and a certain naivety as to what it was like to be an African living in a Western culture. It was during my very first visit and stay in Europe, under a residency program from the French Ministry of culture. I was like a sponge, soaking in myriad experiences. I was drawn to the African community in the little but well-to-do town of Bordeaux in the West of France. More so due to the complex relationship between this city and Africa, for the fact that it was once a slave port.
What followed was a journey of discovery, of friendship and family far away from home. I met, dinned and photographed many Africans from Mali, Tchad, Senegal, Nigeria, Republic of Benin, etc.…all of whom were grappling with the complex situation of oscillating between two or more cultures.
